The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint, but the actual socket, which is a part of your shoulder blade, is rather shallow. A cartilage-like ligament (called the glenoid labrum) surrounds the socket, extending it and helping to stabilize the arm. Injuries to certain parts of this ligament are called Bankart lesions, and sometimes surgery is necessary to repair these injuries.
Bankart Repair Procedure
If the shoulder is dislocated in a manner that causes a Bankart lesion, you may need surgery to repair the labrum, which is the ligament that surrounds the shoulder socket. Labrum injuries are usually fixed through arthroscopic surgery, which uses a small camera and other tools to avoid the need for open surgery.
During surgery, you will almost certainly receive a local anesthetic to prevent pain, possibly combined with another form of anesthesia to ensure you remain unconscious during the procedure. Once your anesthesia is administered, your surgeon will begin the procedure. The arthroscope is a tiny camera that is inserted through a small incision in your shoulder. This camera allows the surgeon to view the injured ligament.
Next, small tools will be inserted to suture the tear in the ligament. The sutures will restore the shape and function of the labrum, preventing future dislocations of the shoulder. Once the injury is repaired, the small entry points for the tools will also be sutured, and you will rest until your anesthesia wears off.
